How to Use this Tool to Create a DnD Character

Navigate the slideshow using the linked arrows at the bottom of each slide. Roll the dice indicated on each slide to generate a completely random character, or choose some options and roll the rest. As with everything else Dungeons and Dragons, choose your own adventure when you create a character!

Some slides feature keywords unique to certain races or classes. You can find more information about each of these items in the Player’s Handbook (2014), or online on a variety of websites (see supplemental resources below).

Follow the steps on each slide and document them on a Character Sheet to create a DnD character.

What this tool includes

These slides ONLY includes species, classes, and backgrounds from the official Player’s Handbook (2014) and core rules. If you want to create a DnD character with any other features, you may need to lookup the specific details of that species/class/background to complete your character or character sheet.

Throughout this tool, you will completely create a DnD character that is ready to be played if you follow along with a character sheet. Additionally, you will have the option to roll for your character’s appearance and personality.

Terms for New Players Creating Their First DnD Character

  • Abilities – There are 6 core abilities that all DnD characters have: Constitution, Dexterity, Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. How your character is able to interact with the world around them is influenced by these core abilities.
  • Skills – Each ability encompasses a specific set of skills. For example, one’s dexterity determines the starting point of their acrobatics skill. Therefor, a character with extremely high dexterity is very likely to succeed on most acrobatic rolls, which they perform whenever they attempt an acrobatic maneuver (doing a cartwheel, walking a tightrope, doing a flip, etc.).
  • Proficiencies – If a character is proficient with a skill, tool, or weapon, it means they get to add 2 to their roll when they are making an attempt to use that thing. When you create a DnD character, different classes and species will have different options for skill proficiencies. To indicate proficiency, you fill in the bubble next to that skill.
